The ncc members bring with them a significant experience in the field of applied conservation science, either through working with research institutes and environmental organizations or from the implementation of integrated species and habitats conservation projects, such as a large number of Life projects. They are specialized in species and habitat assessments and surveys, such as avian and mammalian surveys, telemetry and habitat mapping, management and analysis of spatial ecological data, including development and operation of databases and GIS and development of ecological management plans for sites and species.


Tasos Dimalexis


He was born in Athens. He is a Biologist with postgraduate studies in the Management of Mediterranean Ecosystems and a PhD in Herons foraging ecology at the wetlands of Kerkini and Prespa. He started his professional carrier as a wildlife biologist in 1992 and since then he has implemented a number of species and site conservation and management projects, as well as environmental assessments and technical studies, including Management Plans, Species Action Plans and Wetland Restoration Plans, in collaboration with universities, research institutes, public authorities and NGOs in Greece and abroad. Up to now he has co-ordinated 5 Life projects (Nature, Biodiversity and Environment). During 2000-2008 he was a partner in the environmental consultancy Endiaitima. From 2001 onwards he became an active member of the Hellenic Ornithological Society, initially as a Secretary of the Board and scientific Advisor and later as Conservation Director (2006-2010). He participated in Birdlife's Birds and Habitats Task Force and has attended a number of Birdlife seminars. During the last 20 years he has coordinated many avian and biodiversity conservation and management projects, he has a number of scientific publications and gave presentations in many scientific congresses and seminars. He has prepared more than 15 Life project proposals, in collaboration with NGOs, public authorities and research institutes. He is the Manager of NCC.


Jakob Fric


He was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 1998 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department (University of Ljubljana). Since 2008, he is a PhD candidate in conservation genetics at the Biology Department of the University of Athens. He worked as a researcher at Solid State Physics Department, at Josef Stefan Institute (Ljubljana) and at the Department of Physics and Mathematics (University of Ljubljana). In 2000 he came in Greece and worked for 5 years in the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital of Aegina, Greece. Since 2004 he’s been working at the Hellenic Ornithological Society where he has participated in many European research projects, either as a researcher or as a scientific coordinator. He is mainly specialized in avian assessment and monitoring using both classical and state of the art technologies (telemetry, meteorological radars etc). He also gained experience at the database processing and at data management and analysis using statistical modelling and GIS applications. Finally he is also specialized at the protected areas (mainly insular) management (e.g. invasive species control).


Margarita Tzali


She was born in Serres. In 2004 she graduated from the Environmental Engineering Department of the Technical University of Crete. In 2007 she obtained her M.Sc. degree in Physical Oceanography at the Graduated Program in Oceanography and Marine Management of the University of Athens. She worked as a research associate - member of the Ocean Physics and Modelling Group of the University of Athens for the period 2007-2012 and has participated in national and European research projects, where she specialized in the study of the general sea circulation using numerical modeling and  the development and maintenance of operational forecasting systems. Also, for the period 2008-2013 she worked as coordinator of the volunteering projects “Important Bird Areas Caretakers Network in Greece” and “Bird census and monitoring of the wetlands of Attica” of the Hellenic Ornithological Society.


Polyxeni Galani


She was born in Agrinio. In 2001 she graduated from the Biology Department of the University of Crete. She worked as a Laboratory Courses Assistant in Botany & Taxonomy Course (Technological Educational Institute of Crete, 2002-2005). She has participated in many European and International research projects at the Mediterranean Plant Conservation Unit of MAICh where she worked as a research fellow (2005-2008) and she gained experience in rare and endemic plants collection, the special operations needed for the seed storage in the Seed Banks and issues concerning conservation and management of protected areas and plant species as well as public awareness and interpretation.


Alexandra Kontou

She was born in Ioannina. In 2001 she graduated from the Department of Conservation and Environmental Management (University of Derby, UK) and in 2002 she was awarded with an MSc degree in Environmental Management. Her professional activity began in 2003 and since then she has worked in various positions mainly specialized in the management of environmental protected areas. In 2004 she worked in the Department of environment for the company OEOA "ATHENS 2004", while during 2004-2008 she worked at the Department of Environmental and Waste Management of Ioannina Municipality, where she actively participated in the planning and managing of solid waste and recycling projects, the restoration projects for Lake Pamvotis, as well as the elaboration of environmental impact assessments and supply studies. During 2008-2011 she worked in the Specialized Agency for the Environment and the Department for the Management of Natural Environment of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, where she specialized in the evaluation of Preliminary Environmental Studies and Environmental Impact Assessments for large scale projects and activities located within environmental protected areas. In this context she gained a significant experience in the field of managing natural environment, she dealt with issues concerning the legislative framework for Protected Areas (i.e. Natura 2000 network) while she was specialized in the environmental licensing process for plans and projects. She has attended various seminars and training programs in relation to the management of protected areas and she owns an A Class license for Environmental Studies.


Nikos Probonas

Born in Athens, he records and monitors birds from a very young age (near 40 years now).He is undoubtedly one of the most skilled birdwatchers of Greece. He is the Secretary of the Hellenic Rarities Committee, a joint activity of the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center for monitoring and evaluation of rare bird records in Greece, since its initiation. He has participated in a series of bird monitoring and conservation projects, contributed to the preparation and implementation of voluntary bird monitoring programs of the Hellenic Ornithological Society, has participated as an author, editor or consultant in the preparation of several ornithological publications and has helped many birdwatchers in their first steps. He is member of the NCC field team since 2011.


Nikos Skoularikos

He was born in Athens. In 2002 he graduated from the the Department of Economic and Regional Development of Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, where he specialized in the field of Regional Science. He continued his studies in the scientific field of natural environment management by attending the Graduate Program on "Sustainable Management of Protected Areas" acquiring specialized Master in "Conservation and Natural Environment Management of protected Areas". He has worked as an economist, financial manager for National and European Programs and as environmental consultant in the public and private sectors, while has worked on a voluntary basis in NGOs. He is an active member of the Economic Chamber of Greece and the Greek Regional Science Association.


Adamantia Pylara

She was born in Athens. In 2005 she graduated from the Department of Biology, University of Patras and holds MSc in Ecology-Environmental Management and Protection of Natural areas. She has worked in the private sector participating in the elaboration of Environmental Studies for projects and activities in sites of the Natura 2000 network. The period 2011-2014 she worked in the Management Agency of Karpathos and Saria protected area and participated among others in the design and implementation of projects for the conservation and management of the protected area, of environmental education programs and of voluntary actions and awareness-raising actions. She has experience in the implementation of projects and surveys for the conservation, management and restoration of the natural environment.


Konstantina Skandali

She was born in Athens. She has over 10 years of professional experience mainly dealing with the secretarial support in nature conservation consultancies. During 2001-2010 she worked as a secretary in the environmental consultancy “Endiaitima”. Since 2011 she is working at NCC Ltd being responsible for the administrative at financial aspects of the company.



Collaborating experts


Vasilis Goritsas
He was born in Athens. In 2005 he graduated from the Environment Department of the Aegean University of Greece, and in 2010 he obtained an M.Sc degree on Environmental Protection and Energy Management Systems (University of Piraeus). He has worked as an external collaborator, contributing to the preparations of Life project proposals. He has also participated as a field researcher in islet ecosystem management actions, such as controlling invasive species, in Life10 NAT/GR/000637 project for the management of the Special Protection Area of Andros island. He has also contributed to developing technical plans and specifications of the preparatory actions of the project.



The capacity of ncc is based on the experience, specialization and know-how of its members but also to a wide network of collaborating scientists and researchers from Greece and abroad. This network includes universities, research institutes, environmental organizations as well as individual experts.
